Isabel Neilsen

Isabel and Ray Neilsen were known for their selfless dedication to the Calaveras community. They donated their time and resources to the betterment of those around them. He served for many years on the board of directors of Mark Twain Hospital and the Calaveras County Water District. Isabel was a hospital volunteer for decades.

She was a career teacher when she met Ray while visiting relatives in Calaveras County. They married in 1948 and made their home in San Andreas. Together they steered his family business, Neilsen Gravel, as it grew into a major concrete supplier for regional construction projects. The firm provided concrete for landmark local projects like the original Mark Twain Hospital, the first Calaveras County airport runway and Bear Valley ski resort. He was a leader in the Tri-County Mining Association.

After Ray passed away in 1991 Isabel continued her dedication to the community. She was named Calaveras County Senior Citizen of the Year in 2001 in recognition of her good works supporting the hospital, its Foundation and Auxiliary – and many other community groups. She served on the Foundation board and was instrumental in the capital campaign for the new hospital.

Ray and Isabel created a lasting legacy for the community they loved. Upon her passing in 2014, her trust made significant gifts to several local organizations – including our Foundation.
